Humpback whales use a feeding technique called lunge feeding, where they open their mouths wide and swallow a massive amount of water and fish in one go. And this time? Captain Tyler McKeen of Blue Kingdom Tours described the spectacle as both funny and surreal. After the whale lunged toward its prey and began filtering the water out, everyone noticed something strange—Zillion surfaced, opening and closing its mouth in a manner that suggested something unusual was going on.
Photographs and videos were quickly reviewed, and that’s when it was confirmed: the poor seal had been scooped up with the fish!
“It only took a couple of seconds for everybody to pull up the frames and zoom in,” McKeen said. “That’s when we saw the seal. It was a funny, funny moment for everybody. I mean, it probably wasn’t that funny for the seal.”
McKeen, who captured a video of the moment, added that the seal was eventually flushed out, likely as bewildered as the whale watchers were. But hey, at least it didn’t end up as an accidental snack!
