José Salvador Alvarenga

Man Lost at Sea for 438 Days Says He Had the ‘Best Sex Ever’ There

In November 2012, José Salvador Alvarenga, a seasoned fisherman, set out on what was meant to be a routine two-day fishing trip off the coast of Mexico. Little did he know that this trip would turn into one of the most extraordinary survival stories ever recorded. Alvarenga’s ordeal lasted an incredible 438 days, during which he drifted thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean, surviving on a diet of raw fish, birds, and rainwater.

The trip began with Alvarenga and a young, inexperienced fisherman named Ezequiel Córdoba. Despite initial success, a fierce storm soon trapped them at sea. Their engine failed, and they lost most of their fishing equipment. As the days turned into weeks, the situation grew increasingly dire. They managed to survive by catching and eating turtles, small sharks, and seabirds. They even collected rainwater in makeshift containers made from discarded plastic bottles.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Alvarenga’s survival was his ability to maintain his mental health. In interviews after his rescue, Alvarenga revealed that he kept himself sane by imagining elaborate meals and sexual encounters. He later claimed that these imaginary experiences were among the best of his life, a testament to the power of the human mind in extreme situations.

Unfortunately, Córdoba did not survive the ordeal. Around ten weeks into their journey, he refused to eat after consuming a poisonous bird. Weakened and malnourished, Córdoba eventually died, leaving Alvarenga alone for the remainder of his time at sea. Alvarenga later expressed deep sorrow for his companion’s death, carrying Córdoba’s body on board for several days before reluctantly setting it adrift.

After 438 days and more than 6,000 miles at sea, Alvarenga was finally found on the remote Ebon Atoll in the Marshall Islands, roughly 6,700 miles from where he started. He was emaciated, dehydrated, and suffering from a variety of ailments, but miraculously alive. His survival defied all odds, and his story captivated the world.

Alvarenga’s tale has been met with skepticism by some, given the sheer improbability of surviving at sea for such an extended period. However, various experts and investigations have supported key elements of his story, making it one of the most well-documented survival accounts in recent history.

After his rescue, Alvarenga returned to El Salvador, where he was reunited with his family. Despite the physical and emotional scars left by his ordeal, he has continued to share his story, providing a unique insight into human resilience and the will to survive against all odds.

This extraordinary tale was later chronicled in the book 438 Days: An Extraordinary True Story of Survival at Sea by journalist Jonathan Franklin, offering a detailed account of Alvarenga’s harrowing experience.
